An overview of our family-owned denim workshop, in Zhongshan, China
Doublewood Denim was established by 3 close childhood friends, who share the same passions towards fine denims w/ an un-compromising aptitude. After almost 2 years of many prototype reiterations & sporadic moonlight works in SF, our project was officially launched in the Winter of 2013.
Trained as Architect, Engineer & Marketing analyst in San Francisco, we have a deep-rooted belief in rational function and sustainable aesthetics. We see raw selvedge denim as a blank canvas which each individual can carve a distinct look through everyday wears. We are obsessed by this fine-aging process and it was this exact notion that drove us to craft a pair of jeans that genuinely imbued w/ such ideals.
Origin of our workshop
Our denim workshop is located in Zhongshan, Guangdong province of Southern China. Zhongshan has been historically renowned for its superb textile and garment production.
Our family-owned workshop has over 30 years experience in premium jeans making.
RAW SELVEDGE DENIM FABRICS DIRECTLY SOURCED FROM A PRESTIGE JAPANESE DENIM MILL IN FUKUYAMA, HIROSHIMA.
The craft process & a collaborative working environment
Due to the intricate denim details and our stringent standard in quality control; our workshop has dedicated
a group of talented denim artisans w/ an average of 15 yrs experience, solely for our denim production.
From pattern cutting to ready-to-wear
(including our exclusive canvas tote bag),
this devoted team can only craft 3 pairs of our jeans each day.
Upon final review, our jeans are then hand-stamped for numbering in inner pocket to indicate limited batch and also for quality assurance.
As we understand 'Made in China' goods often linked w/ an adverse undertone; it's utmost critical for us to assure our tailors are fairly/equally treated and work in a sweatshop-free environment. The folks at our factory have an average 8yr+ employment span. This is truly an outstanding commitment between both of our workshop and the tailors, considering the extreme rapid economic growth (garment mfg, in particular) in Southern China.
SUPERIOR CRAFTSMANSHIP IS AN ACQUIRED SKILL.
IN ORDER TO RETAIN THE PREMIUM STANDARD OF OUR JEANS, WE ENSURE THE VOICE OF THE TAILORS TO BE HEARD AND MAINTAIN THE DENIM MAKING PROCESS TO BE A COLLECTIVE EFFORT IN A PARALLEL HIERARCHY SETTING.
Happy tailors, quality jeans; has been our workshop's cornerstone since day one.
Sustainability & Artisanal Machinery
We always strive to mitigate our environment impact within the manufacturing process. For the past 10 years, our workshop have invested heavily in advanced technologies and modern machinery imported from Italy, in light to evolve our productions to be more eco-conscious. As a result, our workshop had further reduced the energy and water consumption by a remarkable 37%.
CHOOSING FROM VINTAGE TO ADVANCED MODERN MACHINERY, OUR TAILORS ADOPT THE SPECIFIC TOOLS THAT ARE BESPOKE FOR THE AESTHETICS IN VARIOUS PARTS OF OUR DENIM.
Additionally, our raw denim are unwashed & untreated, which consume significantly less energy to process. To put this into context, in comparison to washed & pre-distressed jeans,
raw denim typically saved ~42 liters of water, per pair.
Attention to details
EACH COMPONENT IS METICULOUSLY CURATED:
i.e. WE USED THE PREMIUM AMERICAN & EFIRD THREAD FOR ITS VIBRANT COLOR AND SUPREME DURABILITY ON
EACH AND EVERY PAIR OF OUR JEANS
Designed in San Francisco, Crafted in Zhongshan
The phase ‘Doublewood’ and our logo were derived from the Chinese character ‘林’ which originated as an ancient pictogram of two trees. Coincidentally, the last names of all three of us were embedded w/ a 'wood' component as in Chinese calligraphy form. Like fine aged antique wood, our jeans are made to sustain through rigorous daily wears, and about to turn into an unique personal manifesto through time. Being meticulous to every single detail has been our perennial design philosophy. Unlike many other denim brands, our jeans are crafted in a family-owned workshop in lieu of thru a 3rd party manufacture assembly line. We are enormously proud of this relationship, which allows us to have a lot more prototype reiterations during denim development phase while still keeping the overhead cost sensible, and retaining a scalable capacity for final production.
